By Laura Valentine May 15, 2025

When it comes to outdoor fun and adventure, Louisville Central boasts some of the best playgrounds and parks that will keep kids entertained for hours. From swings and slides to climbing walls and water features, Louisville’s parks and playgrounds keep my kids active, provide great opportunities to meet old friends and make new ones, and best of all, they're FREE!

I often get asked about our favorite playgrounds, so I thought I'd share my family's top five playgrounds and parks in Louisville Central with you.

Parent Pro Tip: Keep it simple! All these parks are close to our home, school, or libraries. Use what you have close to you!

Farnsley Park

3100 Wedgewood Way
Louisville, KY 40220

What we love:

This is my go to park when it's hot outside. Farnsley Park has a spray ground to cool off the kids AND the playgrounds and swings are in a very well shaded area. I also love that there is a separate playground space for the little ones, and it’s fenced in. Farnsley is not a huge park but it's super cute with a little walking bridge, creek, and quiet picnic spots. And the cherry on top, Bon Air Library is just around the corner!

Amenities:

  • Multi-purpose Field
  • Picnic Shelter
  • Picnic Table
  • Playground
  • Swings
  • Restrooms
  • Sprayground
  • Tennis Courts
  • WiFi

Pee Wee Park

2913 Klondike Ln
Louisville, KY 40218

What we LOVE:

My favorite thing about Pee Wee Park is that I can walk the little path that circles the playground and never lose sight of my kids. It also has a pretty good mix of equipment to keep most ages entertained, at least for a little while. This park, while little, sits quietly in a community with lots of families so it's common for us to visit and make new best friends.

Amenities:

  • Grill
  • Pickleball Court
  • Picnic Shelter
  • Picnic Tables
  • Playground
  • Swings
  • Walking path
  • WiFi

Fern Creek Park

8703 Ferndale Rd.
Louisville, KY 40291

What we LOVE:

This playground is fenced in! I love that for me because my littlest one is a runner. There’s actually two playgrounds because Fern Creek Park is rather big and can host multiple ball games at a time. There’s even a concession stand for busy game nights.

Amenities:

  • Ballfield
  • Grill
  • Hiking Trail
  • Multi-purpose Field
  • Picnic Shelter
  • Picnic Table
  • Playground
  • Restrooms
  • Tennis
  • Walking

Des Pres Park

4709 Lowe Rd.
Louisville, KY 40220

What we LOVE:

This is a new favorite of our family's even though it's the closest to our house. Des Pres Park is big and has a lot of amenities so you’ll find a lot of different activities going on at all times. The local elementary school teams play basketball, baseball, football and cheerleading here and there’s plenty of extra space for pick up games. My big kids love that they can always find a friend to play with, and I love walking path for morning stroller rides with our 2 year old.

Amenities:

  • Ballfield
  • Basketball court
  • Grill
  • Multi-purpose Field
  • Pickleball & Tennis court
  • Picnic Shelter
  • Picnic Table

Big Rock @ Cherokee Park

2199 Park Boundary Rd
Louisville, KY 40205

What we LOVE:

Big Rock is one of my favorite places to picnic with the kiddos. There’s a playground with a little rock wall that my littles love, lots of area to sit and put down a blanket, and best of all…the creek! You’ll find families and happy doggos wading through and cooling off through the summer season.

Big Rock is part of Cherokee Park, with just shy of 400 acres and a whole host of fun amenities. Find out more about Cherokee Park here.

Amenities:

  • Playground
  • Swings
  • Picnic Tables
  • Pet Friendly
  • Hiking trails
